Music’s function is especially important and prominent within the media sources. From movies to television, music is, in my opinion, what “makes” it. Within movies, it provokes certain feelings and emotions within the audience. Catchy tunes are created to stir a memory and to engrain certain images within our minds. For example, people hear “Duh duh -- duh duh-- duh duh duh duh duh duh” and they automatically remember the popular film “Jaws”. A horror film would not be as chilling without the high-pitched, staccato songs which accompanies the scenes. The constant change in music depicts the various emotions the director wants to stir up in different scenes. Music is also used as an object for propaganda. In commercials, music evokes memories according to the product being sold and the images a company wants to provoke, from sentiment to humor. Music is a key part of the media because it directly relays emotion to the audience.
In today's society, music is also used in aiding scientific experiments and research. Music has been tested in labs showing that it has the ability to stimulate growth. Studies have demonstrated faster development in plants surrounded by music compared to plants cultivated in silence. Also, musical patterns prompt brain activity and increase brain development. Students who have a creative outlet, such as a musical instrument, like piano, allow them to use 20 percent of their brain, rather than the one percent that is normally used. Music expands the brain's capability of anaylitical thought and helps develop useful skills, such as discipline. Science has been greatly impacted by the study of music and its effects to its environment, and has been used to enhance several experiments.
One function of music in our society that I am familiar with is "Muzak," which is actually the name of a corporation that distributes music to retail stores and other companies. Muzak has also become known as a generic term for so-called "elevator music." This kind of music is important in our society because it makes the experience of a shopper or buyer different and unique. Often, the type of music you are listening to puts you in a certain mood. This mood could be happy, sad, determined, or a number of other things. When customers are shopping for something, employees want them to be in a happy mood so that they will buy their products. Therefore, this affects the experience of a customer in any particular shop or mall, and can even determine what one does or does not buy.
One of the biggest functions of music in our society is in religion. Religious music is found everywhere around the world for all religions. It serves as a way to express devotion or in my opinion, it makes abstract ideas like God a more physical thing. It puts emotions into something that can be heard and felt or played or sung. People singing sacred or religous music together, are further unified by their beliefs in the idea that it expresses. Since the beginning of time, music has played a significant role in strengthening worship and religion.
One of music's many functions is to function as an occupation. There are many jobs related to music including a singer, composer, or a producer. Music is a great occupation because it displays a person's creativity and opinions in a way that every person can relate to: through music. Also, music is a great occupation because it isn't thought of as a job. It is thought of as more of a form of entertainment. For example, when a person hears a song written by Beethoven, they think of it as entertainment like going to a symphony or performance to listen to it. But really, Beethoven made this music to entertain but also to support himself. Music isn't just thought of in one perspective, but many.
Music has become an essential part of life thses days. It can be seen and heard everyhere whether it be the entrtainment industry, reilgious activities, cultural progarammes, games, even in school where th ekids have their iPods with them 24x7. Music is a very important part in the entertainment business just like Presley said. Without those backgroud scores the movies would be inanimate. There ouldn't be that charm and excitement there is. Music adds a spark to our everyday boring lif. It is also used in religious activities like the church choirs sing religious songs nd pray to GOD. Music makes our hearts content. I think that music is also used as a source of encouargemnt thses days. Like at football games the band plays and i think in a way it is somewhat encouaraging to the players that the people are cheering for them and the band is there for them. Music adds cheerfulness in our lives.
Music finds its wa into so many parts of our lives. It trickles into many areas sch as movies and "elevatr music". It also is a major component in dance. I've never seen a dancer just bust a move without some sort of rhythm or melody acompanying them. It adds soul and flow to a dance. Music dictates the mood and overall type of dance. It'd be pretty weird to watch someone dancing a waltz to rap music. When a person says "you dance to the beat of your own drum", there's a reason: without a central basis of music, dancing wouldn't really even be possible.
